WA bushfire warnings downgraded

A bushfire burning in the WA town of Allanooka is no longer considered a risk to lives or property.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services had earlier issued a warning for residents either to leave or be prepared to stay and fight the blaze.

The fire is now controlled but not contained, with residents and motorists still urged to exercise caution amid high levels of smoke.

Earlier in the day, a bushfire alert for Argyle and Gwindinup was also downgraded as conditions improved after it burnt down three sheds and 214ha of land.

There were also fears on Saturday of a cyclone barrelling ashore in the north between Exmouth and Ningaloo but this was discounted by forecasters as night fell.

A severe thunderstorm alert was issued in the east, with residents in the Midwest-Gascoyne, Goldfields-Midlands and Upper Great Southern regions urged to exercise caution in conditions with the potential to damage homes and make travel dangerous.
