ABS pushing August 9 census online option

As both sides of politics push for electronic voting, the Australian Bureau of Statistics is urging households to fill in next month's census online.

About 10 million letters with a unique login and instructions on how to complete the survey online will be sent to every household around the country ahead of census night on August 9.

The letter will also provide details on how to request a paper census form, but the ABS expects 16 million people will take the e-option.

More than 100 mobile teams will travel to remote areas to ensure everyone is counted.

In Western Australia, 24 team members will work across almost 50 indigenous communities, helped by about 70 local people who will work as facilitators.

"In some communities English is not the first language spoken, or may not be spoken at all," team leader for the Mid-West region Vicki Martyn said.

"So where we can, we employ local people who can conduct the interview rather than asking people to complete a paper form."

The first results from the 2016 Census will be released in April next year.
