An iron ore mining company has been fined $40,000 after a gantry crane smashed into an elevated work platform at its flagship project in Western Australia, an incident that could have caused a double fatality, the regulator says.

Two electrical workers who were standing on the platform and saw the crane coming at them in the August 2015 incident at the Karara project in the state's Mid West had no option but to brace and managed to escape injury.

"This incident could have resulted in serious injuries or a double fatality," Andrew Chaplyn of the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety said after the penalty was handed down to Karara Mining Ltd in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
