WA road deaths up road toll to eight

Three deaths in Western Australia on Easter Monday have taken the long weekend road toll to eight.

However, the Easter weekend's nationwide road toll remains one of the lowest in years.

Four people lost their lives on Monday, including three on Western Australian roads.

A 39-year-old man was killed after he crashed his car near Katanning, a 33-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident near Gidgegannup and a 29-year-old female driver was also killed in a two-car collision near Bullsbrook.

In South Australia, a 70-year-old woman was killed in a two-car collision at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley on Monday afternoon.

Over the long weekend, fatalities were also recorded in the Northern Territory, NSW and in Victoria, where an unborn baby died after its 31-year-old mother was seriously injured in a car crash.

Despite the carnage, this year's road toll is significantly lower than last year's figure of 22.

ACT, Tasmania and Queensland remained fatality free, with Queensland seeing a marked improvement after eight deaths on its roads in the same period last year.

Police across the country ran state-based operations during the Easter long weekend, targeting drink and drug driving, speeding, mobile-phone use and other forms of dangerous driving.
