Australians relying on Vodafone for their mobile phone coverage have been hit by an outage, with thousands of customers complaining of being unable to send texts or make calls.

The telco confirmed to 9news.com.au that some of its customers were impacted by "brief" outages today.

"We are aware a technical issue is currently causing brief disruptions to some mobile customers," a Vodafone spokesperson said.

"Our technical teams are working to quickly resolve the issue. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience and thank them for their patience."

According to outage tracking website Downdetector, more than 11,000 Vodafone customers reported a problem with their service just after 4pm (AEDT) today, although that number appeared to be dropping rapidly.

A smaller spike of about 7000 outage reports occurred around 10am.

According to the website, about three-quarters of the issues reported related to mobile phone service, while the bulk of the remaining problems were with mobile data.

People from around the country, including Sydney, the Gold Coast and Perth, took to social media to complain of their phones going to SOS mode.

Some users said restarting their device fixed the issue, while others said the problems were resolved on their own.

9news.com.au understands the technical issue is being fixed and customers were coming back online as of 5.30pm.
