Victorian farmers get $31.5m for drought relief, including mental health support

More than $31.5 million is being poured into drought relief for Victorian farmers by the state government.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Agriculture Minister Jaclyn Symes will announce the funding at the Bairnsdale Demonstration Farm today.

The money will be split to create grants for families, farm infrastructure, business planning, mental health support, and helping farmers develop another income stream, Mr Andrews said ahead of the press conference.

"This is a balanced package, it won't make it rain, no drought package can do that, but it is about targeted, practical support," Mr Andrews told ABC radio.

There has been criticism from the opposition that the government hasn't done enough to stop the drought and Victoria's water woes and more dams should be built, but Mr Andrews said that would not be happening.

"Dams don't make it rain," Mr Andrews said.

"There are a number of infrastructure projects when it comes to water that are worthy and important and we should get on with them."
