A man is fighting for life after a shooting in a town in Victoria's Gippsland region.

Witnesses told police a man was shot about 8.15pm on Monday during an altercation between two groups of men in Moe, about 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne in the Latrobe Valley.

The 28-year-old was rushed to hospital with critical injuries from the Hawker Street address, where a crime scene has been set up.
