Illegal Melbourne engagement party hit with fines totalling $305,000

Victoria Police have slugged 56 people more than $300,000 for attending an illegal Melbourne engagement party during the state's sixth coronavirus lockdown.

In the video of the party, the groom-to-be could be heard joking in his speech: "Clearly this is legal because this is a group therapy session, that's why my father's here."

In a statement to 9News, Victoria Police confirmed all 56 adults at the Caulfield North party had been identified and each hit with a $5452 fine.

"The remaining party guests were children and will not be fined," the spokesperson said.

"Victoria Police is satisfied all guests have been accounted for and the investigation has now concluded."

In the video nobody inside the packed room was wearing a mask.

A number of people at the party later tested positive for coronavirus.

The footage infuriated Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews, who later described the actions of party-goers as "selfish".

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton called the engagement party "incredibly destructive".
