SES responds to 600 calls for help in Melb

Wild winds and heavy rain drenched parts of Melbourne overnight with hundreds of residents calling the State Emergency Service for help.

The flash storm hit suburbs in the east and southeast around 3.30am on Sunday with the SES receiving in excess of 600 calls for help.

SES spokesman Marc Dorey said crews had been busy cleaning up fallen trees all morning and were expecting the number of calls to grow as people wake up.

"We've got a high number of calls for things like trees down and minor property damage but no significant damage we know of at this stage," Mr Dorey told AAP on Sunday.

He said the hardest-hit suburbs include Lilydale, Chadstone, Emerald and Narre Warren South.
