What Fair Work has changed for casuals

WHAT THE FAIR WORK COMMISSION WANTS TO CHANGE FOR CASUALS

* Fair Work says casual employment numbers haven't changed significantly

* But some employers hire casuals indefinitely when they want to be permanent

* Proposed Fair Work model sees casuals offered permanent jobs after 12 months

* Only if they've worked a pattern of hours that could be performed in a permanent role

* A conversion to a permanent job could be refused if it would need a significant change to a casual's hours, or if the job would cease to exist

* The unions asked for minimum four-hour shifts on all 85 awards

* Industry groups argued four-hour shifts would stop school kids being given after-school jobs

* Fair Work says two-hour minimum shifts are fair

* The commission will consider submissions on the draft proposals.
