South American man killed in Victorian crash just two months after starting job

A Chilean man who had been working on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula for just over a month has been identified as one of two men killed in a horror car crash.

Friends of Alejandro Morales are remembering him as a fun, loving and kind person who loved travelling and loved Australia.

They gathered at the Rye intersection where he was killed overnight to lay flowers and pay tribute.

"He was always happy and smiling and wanted to see everything in the world," one friend said.

"I wanted someone from here to show their respects and show he's loved here as well."

Residents heard a loud bang at 10pm last night and saw two of the victims lying the side of the road.

One died there, the other died later in hospital.

A 33-year- old woman was also airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The group had been travelling with two others in a hatchback, when their vehicle collided with a ute.

The driver of the ute wasn't badly hurt.

It's thought the group may have been returning home from work. Police are looking for dash cam footage and witnesses.

Meanwhile, a man driving an SUV at Pearcedale, south east Melbourne, was killed after hitting a semi-trailer head-on today.

Police say the man was attempting to overtake two cars on Baxter-Tooradin Road at 12.20pm.

The truck driver wasn't seriously hurt.

Police are investigating.

Ten lives have now been lost this year on Victorian roads.
