Victoria goes to polls, Labor to win

Victorians go to the polls for a state election where Labor could retake government after only one term in opposition.

About 2.5 million Victorians will cast their votes as polling booths open from 8am to 6pm on Saturday.

A record 1.1 million voters have already lodged a pre-poll vote, either an early or postal vote.

The pre-poll vote count does not get under way until Monday, meaning a period of government-in-limbo should no clear winner emerge from Saturday's general count.

A Labor win would result in Victoria's first one-term government since 1955.

Labor has run hard on promises to pump dollars into TAFE, hold a royal commission into family violence, and scrap the Napthine government's East West Link tollway.

The coalition government says it alone has a plan to address Melbourne's traffic congestion, bolster jobs and the economy, and keep the budget in surplus.

A coalition win would run contrary to opinion polls since March.

Three polls released on election eve had Labor in front, leading 52-48 on a two-party preferred vote.
