Campers evacuated as bushfire burns in Victoria's east

Victoria has had its first test of bushfire season in the state's high country.

Firefighters will continue to protect communities as several warnings remain in place.

A bushfire started burning at Rawson at 5am on Sunday, while the road to the nearby historic township of Walhalla was closed.

Tourists were told to end their long weekends early as firefighters tackled the blaze.

"We've gone out and evacuated some campers, moved them on from the camping grounds," Rawson incident dontroller Jonathan Wood said on Sunday.

The situation was a different story further east.

Earlier in the day, resident Alan Walsh was unable to leave the town of Loch Sport due to the roadblock.

"We're close to the lake if worse comes to worse," he said.

Throughout the day several warnings were issued, including for Rawson and Loch Sport.

It is expected winds will continue to be a challenge for firefighters for several days.

Bureau of Meteorology community information lead Angus Hines said winds will ease on Sunday night but slowly pick up again on Monday.

"Then it's another very windy day on Tuesday - getting very, very warm again," Hines said.
