Miraculous escape from terrifying head-on crash captured on dashcam

A 51-year-old woman has been charged over a wrong-way crash on a Melbourne bridge that was millimetres from being a head-on disaster.

According to police, a Subaru Outback involved in the collision drove through the city’s Burnley Tunnel about 11.30pm on Sunday.

When it reached the Bolte Bridge, it collided with a Kia Sorrento, which was being used as a rideshare car, with six people inside that was driving in the correct direction.

Dashcam footage showed the impact of the crash, with the oncoming car appearing to glance off the passenger side of the Kia before narrowly missing a second car.

The collision was still enough to send the Kia off course and into the barrier.

While ambulance crews were called to the scene, remarkably, nobody was injured.

One person was heard in the dashcam footage sounding noticeably shaken as they asked if the other people in the car were okay.

The rideshare driver, Mark, was taking five passengers home to Toorak from the airport when he took the off-ramp to the Burnley Tunnel.

“That’s when the other car just came speeding up the ramp there, but the wrong way,” he said.

On Monday afternoon, Mark told 3AW radio host Jacqui Felgate they were lucky to escape without injury.

He said the left side of his car was hit so hard that the rear tyre was ripped off.

“It was about 100, probably 150 metres up the road,” he said.

“Even the police last night said it could have been a lot worse.

“It’s just, just frightening and the car actually went up onto, on the side.

“I actually managed to get it back down on the wheels.”

Police have charged a woman, from Rye on the Mornington Peninsula, with reckless conduct offences, possessing a drug of dependence and various traffic offences over the incident.

She has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates court at a later date.

A man aged 60 also from Rye was also arrested.

Police say the car wasn’t stolen, and they are looking for witnesses and footage.
