Vic workers could carry leave between jobs

Victorian workers who change jobs could soon be able to carry their long service entitlements from one employer to another.

A Parliamentary Committee inquiry will investigate portable long service leave schemes and how they might be extended and improved in Victoria, Minister for Industrial Relations Natalie Hutchins says.

Construction contractors are already able to accrue their long service leave as they move from job to job and a result of the inquiry may mean community services workers could do the same.

"Workers are no longer staying in the same job and with the same company for their entire working lives," Ms Hutchins said on Wednesday.

"We're making sure that workers aren't short-changed, and that entitlements such as long service leave aren't eroded as a result of the shifting way in which we work."

The Economic, Education, Jobs and Skills Committee will consider the economic and social impacts of any change and report back to parliament no later than May 1 next year.
