Vic unions press Andrews for pay deals

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews faces an industrial campaign on three fronts, with police and firefighters threatening to step up pay campaigns and mounting pressure over his links with the CFMEU.

Mr Andrews relied heavily on union support in his 2014 election campaign.

The state has already endured public battles with the ambulance union and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union for pay rises.

One year on from the election, the Andrews government is now under pressure from the Police Association and United Firefighters Union.

Both unions have proposed a series of work bans, including police flashing their lights to warn motorists about speed cameras and a ban on issuing penalty notices, designed to hit the Andrews government right in the hip pocket.

Meanwhile, CFMEU members blocked Melbourne's court precinct on Tuesday as boss John Setka thanked them for their support on his way to court with his deputy, Shaun Reardon.

Both men were bailed to reappear next year on one count each of blackmail, stemming from allegations before the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption.

"This will never be forgotten," Setka told supporters.

So far, Mr Andrews has resisted Victorian opposition calls to boot Setka and Reardon from the ALP.
