Two Melbourne students have been hospitalised after taking drugs during a school camp on the Gold Coast.

Four year 10 students from Brentwood Secondary College were involved in an incident during the camp and two were hospitalised, principal Vicki Forbes said in a statement issued by the Department of Education on Tuesday.

The department would not confirm what drug the students were believed to have taken and did not say when the pair were hospitalised.

According to the school's website, students left Melbourne on Sunday to travel by bus to the Gold Coast.

The camp aims to "broaden student experience in a range of curriculum areas" and "helps to build student self-esteem by encouraging them to undertake new experiences within a supportive environment".

Ms Forbes said the students were safe and well but their behaviour was unacceptable.

"I expect more from our students and those involved can expect to face serious consequences for their unacceptable behaviour," she said.

An education department spokesman said the department would work with the school to support the students.
