Vic puppy farms will be closed: govt

A investigation team targeting cruel puppy farms is being bolstered by a Victorian government grant.

The RSPCA Special Investigations Unit will use the $5 million grant to close illegal puppy farms, prosecute rogue breeders and rehabilitate seized animals.

Changes to legislation are also underway to strengthen the animal breeding code of practice and to regulate pet shops.

RSPCA Victoria CEO Liz Walker said the unit would send a strong message to rogue breeders that there is no place for "their disgraceful practices here in Victoria".
