Vic premier supports sex offender changes

Parents who strike up a relationship with a person on Victoria's sex offenders register will receive a warning from police.

Those on the register will also have to notify police of a change of address within 24 hours and face routine checks on their homes, in an overhaul of Victoria Police practises.

The changes, outlined in a News Corp Australia report on Sunday, have the premier's support.

"We need to do everything we can to keep our kids safe," Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters.

"I think they have made a sensible change; it won't be supported by everybody but it's the right thing to do."

Before the change, police had to notify child protection services rather than directly warn a parent who begins a relationship with a registered sex offender.
