Vic parking inspectors to walk off the job

Melbourne parking inspectors are set to walk off the job during the AFL grand final long weekend, potentially costing the council hundreds of thousands in lost revenue.

Parking officers are set to strike from Thursday to Sunday next week, hoping to get the council to come to the bargaining table over pay and conditions.

They have been discussing a new enterprise bargaining for six months, the Australian Services Union says.

Officers walked off the job for three days in August, and threatened to walk off the job last week during the preliminary AFL finals.

The union says the strike action usually costs the council around $250,000 a day.

ASU spokesman Ty Lockwood says parking inspectors play a vital role in regulating the flow of traffic through the city.

Without the inspectors, he says "the city will be chaotic" next weekend.

"If they're not there, people will generally have free reign," he said.

"If people see an advantage, they'll take it."

Melbourne City Council told the ABC the strike action was "unnecessary" and doesn't contribute to successful negotiations.
