Vic man killed with broken bottle: court

An immigrant from war-torn Somalia had been on bail for a day when he murdered a man with a broken bottle in a savage and random attack, a court has heard.

Shaun Wright had been out celebrating a friend's birthday in March 2013 when he inexplicably threw a piece of wood at a parked car in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy and ran, prompting a group of people to chase and eventually corner him.

Fatah Issa, 27, happened across the pursuit and decided to join in.

He ran after Mr Wright and approached the melee with a broken beer bottle, stabbing him repeatedly to the neck and torso.

Mr Wright, 21, collapsed and died on the front steps of a business.

Issa had 24 hours earlier been charged with common assault and bailed for drunkenly swinging a smashed bottle at another man in a fast food restaurant.

"This was a random, extremely violent attack," Crown prosecutor Mark Rochford, QC, told the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday.

"What was going on had nothing to do with Mr Issa whatsoever."

Issa, who came to Australia when he was seven, has pleaded guilty to murder over the March 17 incident.

Defence barrister David Hallowes conceded the attack on Mr Wright was unprovoked and he had showed only a little remorse.

"He has no recollection of the actual incident," he told the court.

Issa, of Preston, suffered severe developmental trauma after being exposed to extreme violence in Somalia and began abusing alcohol at a young age, the court heard.

Rhonda Wright said her son was a "gentle giant" and his death had left a hole which could not be filled.

His father, Stephen Wright, spoke of days and nights being filled with "cold darkness" after his son's death.

"I have an endless cascade of horror pour through my mind," he told the court.

Justice Christopher Beale will sentence Issa on September 4.
