Vic job applicants face anti-terror checks

The Melbourne branch of a Christian organisation working with the disabled is insisting its job applicants pass anti-terrorism checks before being employed.

CBM Australia is advertising five jobs at its Melbourne office, each requiring candidates undergo background checks.

"Relevant background checks including working with children, police, anti-terrorism and reference checks will be completed prior to the preferred candidate's employment being confirmed," the advertisements say.

CBM's website states the organisation works to improve the lives of people with disabilities in some of the world's poorest countries.

The jobs advertised range from digital coordinator to advocacy and policy manager and major partner lead.

Australian Human Resources Institute chairman Peter Wilson described the ads as unique.

"It's not something I've come across before," he said.

Mr Wilson said specifying terrorism checks was superfluous to ordinary police background checks, which would provide details on any criminal convictions an applicant has anyway.

"Even if police are just looking at someone in terms of potential involvement in terrorism they're not going to tell you," he said.

"The mind boggles on what it actually means."
