Vic driver to face trial over four deaths

A truck driver accused of killing four members of a Victorian family will contest the culpable driving charges at trial.

Jobandeep Gill, 27, is accused of going through a stop sign and ploughing into a car carrying a family of five at Catani, southeast of Melbourne.

Stephen Beckett, 37, his wife Jade, 33, and two of their three children Ella, six, and William, aged two, were killed in the February 28 crash.

Only their nine-year-old son Sam survived.

Gill's committal hearing was told he blamed jammed gears for the crash, but police said they found no mechanical fault with the vehicle.

Gill, of Noble Park, has pleaded not guilty to charges including four counts of culpable driving.

Magistrate Greg Robinson on Friday committed Gill to stand trial at Victorian Supreme Court at a date to be fixed.
