Vic creek killer accused faces court

A homeless man has faced court charged with murder after a body was found in a Melbourne creek.

Dion Laban, 32, of no fixed address, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after a pedestrian came across a body in the Kororoit Creek in Melbourne's west about 9am.

The victim has been identified as Joel Desgranges.

Prosecutors told the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday police would need longer than usual to compile their brief of evidence because a large amount of CCTV footage needed to be processed.

Laban, who was supported in court by friends, has never been in custody before, his defence lawyer said.

Magistrate Michelle Ehrlich remanded him to return to court in April 2016.
