Vic coalition plan for more police powers

Serious crime investigation laws will be overhauled under a plan by the Victorian coalition government.

A draft version of the bill, which has been released for public comment, relates to the arrest, detention and questioning of offenders and the use of fingerprints, DNA and other forensic samples.

There are also changes proposed for obtaining and executing search warrants under the new consolidated powers if the coalition is re-elected on November 29, Attorney-General Robert Clark says.

The government expects the changes will provide greater clarity and certainty about the law, for police and those being investigated.

Police gained increased investigation powers when earlier reforms were introduced in July this year.
