Convicted Victorian baby killer Harley Hicks will appeal his life sentence for the murder of 10-month-old Zayden Veal-Whitting.

Hicks, 21, was jailed for life with a 32-year minimum for bludgeoning the infant to death during a burglary at Bendigo in June 2012.

Lawyers for Hicks on Wednesday applied for leave to appeal the sentence in the state's Court of Appeal.

Hicks pleaded not guilty to the murder, with lawyers arguing his twin brother could not be excluded as a suspect.

But a Victorian Supreme Court jury rejected the suggestion and found him guilty in April.

In sentencing Hicks last month, Victorian Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kaye described the killing as a "totally and utterly evil crime".
