A man seriously assaulted in Melbourne is lucky to be alive, say police, who are hopeful of catching his attackers.

Brett Tattock, 47, who believes two men may have drugged his drink earlier in the night, was beaten and robbed in St Kilda early on the morning of October 11.

"About an hour earlier we'd been having a couple of drinks, they were friendly and they were nice," he said on Thursday.

"They robbed me and they also did some serious damage to me so I'm really concerned."

Detective Sergeant Tim Moreland said released CCTV footage showed the men punched Mr Tattock in the head.

As he lay on the ground, the two men repeatedly stomped and kicked him before searching his pockets and stealing personal items.

"Although some items were stolen from Mr Tattock, we're not sure what the initial intentions were of these parties," he said.

"It's very violent. We're very lucky we're not talking about a homicide today."
