Vic aid worker plans to stay in Nepal

A Melbourne aid worker working in Nepal when the country was hit by a deadly earthquake says he won't be home any time soon.

Wes Pryor has spent the days since Saturday's earthquake travelling between Kathmandu and the country's central and western provinces to ensure thousands of displaced locals have access to surgery and medical supplies.

The country is in desperate need of specialist medical care and personnel, Dr Pryor told AAP.

Dr Pryor, who works for Handicap International but went to Nepal with International Medical Corp, said his training kicked in when the earthquake hit and thankfully significant bruising and some fractures were the worst injuries suffered among his group.

"It was dicey but luckily everybody I was with ran quickly to an open space ... and stayed put until the aftershocks passed," he said on Tuesday.

This wasn't his first earthquake, he wasn't injured, and he has no plans to leave until he has done what he can to help.

"I'll probably bounce out to meet other agencies at a regional level and possibly link up with some other physio agencies, but by and large I think I work here now," he said.

Dr Pryor's main focus has been getting medical supplies to districts outside Kathmandu.

While traffic from people heading south and to India has restricted supplies, some are starting to get through.

"The urgent need is to get people access to surgeries and devices and personnel but then making sure they've got the next step in place too.

"It's insufficient to stop once people are medically stable."

Food and water supplies are stable for now, but Dr Pryor said sanitation, security and access to money might become problems.

"All of that requires money, human resources, technical skills and co-operation," he said.
