Two men critical after NYE in Victoria

Two men are in critical conditions in hospital and two others have have been burnt by illegal fireworks in separate New Year's Eve incidents in Victoria.

Ambulance Victoria said one man aged in his 20s was taken to The Alfred Hospital in suffering critical head and pelvis injuries after he fell from a balcony in Kew just before 2.30am.

Thirty minutes earlier a man aged in his 20s suffered head injuries at Cowes when he jumped from the pier, landing on sand.

He was flown by air ambulance helicopter to The Alfred Hospital, also in a critical condition.

Another man suffered facial burns including singed eyebrows caused by an illegal firework going off at Inverloch.

He was taken to Wonthaggi hospital in a stable condition, Ambulance Victoria said early on Friday.

Another man was lucky to escape serious injury when a firework was discharged near his head at Pikes Creek.

After suffering cuts to his head and burns to the face he made his way to Bacchus Marsh hospital and was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital in a stable condition.

Ambulance Victoria Health Commander Neil Akers said none of the burns were significant.

"It's frustrating that we put warnings out about the risks of using illegal fireworks, yet it hasn't deterred some people," he said in a statement.

But Mr Akers praised people who saw in 2016 in Melbourne's CBD, with the number of triple zero calls down by about a third on last year.

The majority of calls were to people who had fallen, had too much to drink, or had been assaulted, he said.
