One-in-12 Vic truckies 'affected by ice'

One-in-12 truck drivers in Victoria are using the drug ice to fight off fatigue, putting other drivers at risk, police say.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill says there is an increase in ice use among all drivers, but the sheer number of those driving heavy vehicles under the influence is worrying.

Last year 156 truck drivers were caught with methamphetamine in their systems.

This year, there has already been a 20-per-cent increase.

Using illicit drugs and then jumping behind the wheel of a 60-tonne truck is a selfish and irresponsible act, Mr Hill says.

"There is a misconception that by using ice those drivers may be able to stay awake longer, may be more alert behind the wheel," he told reporters.

"That is a myth."

Police are investigating trafficking of the drug between rogue truck drivers at truck stops across the state and will increase roadside drug tests throughout Victoria, Mr Hill says.
