Truck hits same Melbourne rail bridge one day after bus crash

A truck has hit the same Melbourne bridge which peeled the roof off a bus yesterday.

The Port Melbourne-bound truck collided with the Montague Bridge in South Melbourne just before 6pm.

Victoria Police said no one was injured in the crash, and the truck has since been removed.

TODAY Show co-host Lisa Wilkinson snapped a picture of the crash from a taxi moments after the accident.

The crash comes only a day after a tourist bus from Ballarat triggered height sensors and set off flashing warning lights before the driver smashed into the bridge.

The driver and 10 passengers were admitted to hospital following an ordeal which saw four people cut free from the wreckage by fire crews after they became trapped.

Police are still investigating how the driver missed warning signs and slammed into the bridge - but they say it's likely driver error was to blame.

Since January 2015, 14 vehicles have struck the bridge, with three smashing their roofs on it this year.

Despite the rising number of accidents, the road authority insists it is up to drivers to pay attention.

Nonetheless, it will again review the bridge, with VicRoads director Bryan Sherritt saying improvements can be made.

But drivers still needed to be "acutely aware" of their vehicle and the height restrictions of the bridges on their routes, he said.
