Toddler killed by falling bookcase remembered as an 'angel'

A toddler who was killed when a bookshelf fell on him in rural Victoria has been remembered by family as an “angel”.

Three-year-old Blake Shaw was sitting on the floor at the family’s farmhouse in Clear Lake, south-west of Horsham in Victoria, when a heavy bookcase fell on him around 7.30pm on Monday.

His parents quickly called emergency services but paramedics were unable to save the toddler.

The family of the young boy told The Herald Sun they were “struggling to comprehend the tragedy”.

“The worst thing the kid ever did was smile,” his father, Tim Shaw, told the newspaper.

“He was just a perfect little boy.”

The Shaw family said they moved to rural Victoria six months ago to give their children a better quality of life.

The little boy's grandparents rushed from Melbourne after the accident to care of Blake’s devastated parents and their other two other children.

“He was just a perfect little boy,” his grandfather said.

“He just happened to be sitting on the floor and this thing fell down from the wall.

“It was just a bookshelf with doors on it. I don’t want to look at that thing, so I’m going to knock it apart and burn it.

“It was just a fluke.”

Victoria Police said a report is being prepared for the coroner.
