A man has drowned after he was pulled from the surf at a beach on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The man, aged in his 20s, was swimming with friends at Gunnamatta when he was taken out to sea by a rip shortly after 1.15pm, Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said.

Two friends and lifesavers went to his aid and pulled him from the water, Mr Mullen said.

"Lifesavers were involved in giving him CPR when paramedics arrived and they continued to try to resuscitate him but they were unable to do so and he died at the scene," he told AAP.
