Supermarket queue stretches all the way across the store

It's the sort of queue that you might expect for the release of a new Harry Potter book or Apple's latest gadget.

But the shoppers captured in this video are instead simply buying milk and bread at a Coles supermarket in Melbourne's CBD last night.

The line stretches from the checkout down the aisles, past the juice, the toilet paper and the cheese before turning the corner at the milk at the back wall, then taking another turn.

Medical student Rob told the Herald Sun he waited 25 minutes to use the self-checkout system to buy three items.

"There were probably 60 to 70 people," he said.

"It's an issue when you have just a few staff members, and people who are not familiar with the self-checkout system."

A Coles spokesman said the store was one of the busiest in Victoria, but a staff member was always there to assist shoppers.

He said in supermarkets where most shoppers are only buying a few items, self-checkouts are twice as fast.
