Soon you could be swimming lengths in Melbourne's Yarra River

Fresh plans for a public swimming pool in Melbourne’s Yarra River have been revealed, in the hope of giving locals a European-inspired watering hole.

The innovative idea to install a 25-metre floating pool, changing rooms and fishing pontoon in Enterprize Park, adjacent to Melbourne Aquarium, was introduced by not-for-profit group Yarra Pools last year.

“It’s about bringing people back to the river, and to an under-utilised area,” Yarra Swim Co President Matt Stewart told 9NEWS in May 2016.

Akin to river pools seen in European cities including Paris and Berlin, Yarra Pools would use a unique filtration system to insure safe water conditions for swimmers.

Mr Stewart’s $8 million plan has now been revived, with the Herald Sun reporting dozens of potential user groups will assess the idea and a business case will be developed.

“We love great ideas, and different attractions that come to our city,” Deputy Lord Mayor Arron Wood said this morning.

Mr Wood was quick to point out that although the Yarra is murkier than “most rivers around the world”, and “has its detractors”, the idea was not just a pipedream.

“We’ve really got to see the business case, and get things like water quality and the regulatory environment right,” he said.

“But the idea is a great nod to how important the river is to the city.”
