Thousands of motorists have been fined for using their mobile phone while driving or caught failing to wear their seatbelt by Victoria's new high-tech cameras.

New data, obtained by 9News, shows more than 6000 drivers were snapped within July alone by the detection cameras, which were first rolled out in April.

Authorities say they are alarmed by the examples of dangerous behaviour that have been snapped by the cameras.

The cameras were first rolled out during a three-month trial, with that coming to an end on July 1.

Of the more than 6000 motorists caught doing the wrong thing in July, 3300 drivers were using a portable device, mostly mobile phones.

About 2000 drivers were busted not wearing a seatbelt.

"Some people are going to great lengths to not wear a seatbelt including buckling it up behind them," Transport Accident Commission Head of Road Safety Samantha Cockfield said.

"We find it incomprehensible that in a year, where the number of lives on the roads is up considerably - that people would still make a choice to not wear a seatbelt."

The technology automatically reviews each image and if it detects a potential offence, the image is checked over by a qualified independent officer.

Drivers face a $577 fine if they are caught on their phone while driving, along with four demerit points.

If you are caught wearing your seatbelt incorrectly, you will receive a $385 fine and another three demerit points.

There are currently four high-tech mobile cameras operating across the state, with a fifth to be rolled out within months.
