‘Damaging’ weather warning issued for millions

Millions of Victorians, including in Melbourne, are being warned to brace for damaging winds and rain today.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the Central, North Central, West and South Gippsland, and North East forecast districts.

“Damaging winds averaging 6km/hr to 70km/hr with peak gusts of around 90km/hr are possible throughout the central ranges this morning,” the warning reads.

“After sunrise these winds may extend into Melbourne and parts of the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas.”

Melbourne, Yarra Glen, Mount Baw Baw, and Rosebud are among the locations in the path of the system.

Conditions are expected to ease during the afternoon.

Multiple flood warnings have also been issued across the state, including for the Murray, Kiewa, Avoca, Loddon, and Goulburn rivers.

Falls of rain are expected on the central ranges and regions to the north, following the northerly winds.

“Some areas in central and north-west Victoria could see around 15mm to 30mm of rain falling during Tuesday and Wednesday combined,” Weatherzone reported.

“Parts of the state’s south-west could also see around 5mm to 15mm, while Melbourne should see less than 10 mm.”

People in affected regions are urged to secure loose items on their property and to be aware of dangers from falling trees, both at home and while on the road.
