Sculpture celebrates Gallipoli link

A sculpture marking Australia and Turkey's links since Gallipoli will be unveiled in Melbourne before the 100th year Anzac commemorations.

Five years in the making, the Australian Turkish Friendship Memorial sculpture near the Shrine of Remembrance is expected to provide a place for reflecting on the impact of war, and friendship stemming from a shared past.

"The most moving part of the Gallipoli story and the Australian-Turkish relationship is the manner soldiers of both countries were able to keep their humanity in the most inhumane conditions," artist Matthew Harding said in a statement.

The work has curved steel strands symbolising a commemorative wreath, and two steel seed cones - a pine from Turkey and an Australian casuarina seed - representing the fallen from both countries.

It will be officially opened on April 13.
