Public hearings for Vic cops' murder probe

Senior Victorian police will be grilled at public hearings by the anti-corruption watchdog over alleged misconduct during the investigation into a double officer murder.

Sergeant Silk, 35, and Senior Constable Miller, 34, were shot dead on August 16, 1998, after investigating a series of armed robberies in Melbourne.

In November, the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission began an inquiry into whether a police statement was altered during the investigations.

On Wednesday, it announced public hearings in February to examine a range of concerning practices allegedly used by police, and to determine if these police practices are continuing.

"If these concerning practices are still used by Victoria Police, they have the potential to impact the integrity of criminal investigations and the delivery of justice," IBAC commissioner Robert Redlich QC said.

The hearings, named Operation Gloucester, will focus on the taking of witness statements, preparation of the brief of evidence for trial and whether there was full disclosure of witness statements or other relevant information before or during trial.

Mr Redlich will preside over the hearings, joined by counsel assisting Jack Rush QC.

Jason Roberts and Bendali Debs were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murders.

But Roberts claims he was at home with his girlfriend on the night and twice wrote to former attorney-general Martin Pakula for a petition of mercy, claiming he only helped Debs conceal evidence and was not actually at the murder scene.
