Strong winds have brought down power lines and sparked a grassfire in Melbourne.

The fire started on Monday night near the Eastern Freeway in Doncaster when gusty winds brought down a tree onto powerlines.

The blaze quickly spread through scrub along a bike track and jumped the road, with wind blowing embers up to 1km away, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade says.
