Parent dies in Vic schoolyard crash

A car has ploughed through gates at a Melbourne school, killing a father in the school yard.

The car, driven by a woman, crashed through the fence at the back of St Leonard's College in Brighton East about 4.25pm on Tuesday, police say.

The driver is assisting police.

In a statement to parents published on The Age website on Tuesday evening, principal Stuart Davis said the crash happened at the school's junior campus.

"I regret to inform you that a parent was struck and killed in this incident," he said.

Victoria's road toll is 36, one more than at the same time last year.
