Mystery over 2001 Vic park murder

Moments after George Germanos was shot in the head in 2001, a man was seen running from the Melbourne park where his body was found.

Fifteen years later, and despite a $1 million reward offered in 2014, the part-time security guard's execution-style murder remains unsolved.

"Despite an extensive criminal investigation, no person has been identified to date for causing his death," counsel assisting the coroner, Jodie Burns, told the Victorian Coroners Court on Thursday.

Mr Germanos was shot three times in the head and once in the chest at Inverness Park in Armadale on March 22, 2001.

Police are still investigating.

But it is unclear why Mr Germanos went to the park just before 11pm that night, or who lured him there.

Local residents heard a series of gunshots.

Then a neighbour looking out a window saw a man in his 20s running from the park.

Mr Germanos' body was found by police shortly afterwards.

They also found two bullets near the body, and several cigarette butts about 100 metres from where Mr Germanos had been standing.

The 41-year-old, who lived at home with his parents, left their Oakleigh home about 90 minutes before he was fatally shot.

He told his father he was going to work.

The weightlifter had previously run a cafe in Brighton with a business partner before it was sold at a loss.

He had also worked as a debt collector, Ms Burns said.

Police have previously said they believe the killer had links to gangland figures.

A day before he was killed, Mr Germanos was seen arguing in the street with an unknown male, the inquest heard.

Ms Burns said Mr Germanos was a much loved son, brother, uncle and friend.

His parents are still grieving.

"Their house has become like a mausoleum to George," Ms Burns said.

State coroner Sara Hinchey will hand down her findings on the summary inquest on Friday.
