Victoria's new $230 million police complex is now officially the home of 1500 staff.

The first purpose-built police property in the CBD since the Russell St police headquarters was built in 1943 includes an e-crime laboratory for digital evidence, a gym, parents' facilities, a multi-faith space and sleeping quarters.

The 12-storey building, in the Docklands, is a modern complex for the next generation of policing, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said.

"The policing landscape and environment in which we operate is very different these days, and we need the facilities and technology to support us in our work," he said.

The new complex, first proposed six years, centralizes the major crime, intelligence and forensic units while accommodating the local Melbourne West station.
