A man accused of murdering Melbourne woman Prasad Somawansa has faced court.

Sigaragh Baea, 21, from Lara, near Geelong was charged with the 48-year-old's murder on Saturday night after she was found dead in her Hoppers Crossing home on Thursday night.

Baea was not required to speak during the brief hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday.

Little information was given during the hearing, but police on Friday said Ms Somawansa's body was found by a family friend after her husband, who was working interstate, raised the alarm.

She had severe upper body injuries.

Baea was remanded in custody and will return to court on Tuesday.
