Pedestrian hit, killed in Melbourne

A woman has died after being hit by a van in a car park in outer Melbourne, the fourth person to be killed on the state's roads in less than 24 hours.

The van struck the pedestrian outside shops on Thompson Road, Patterson Lakes, just after 12.30pm on Saturday.

Emergency crews tried to revive her but she died at the scene. The male driver of the vehicle is assisting police.

The woman's death came after two people were killed and two others taken to hospital following a collision at Tongala in northern Victoria.

Police say a car heading east along the Murray Valley hit a another vehicle entering the highway just after 8am (AEST).

The occupants of the second car, a man and woman in their 60s, died at the scene.

The five occupants of the first vehicle were also injured, with a man in his 40s taken to hospital with spinal and chest injuries.

A teenage girl was also taken to hospital in a stable condition for pelvis injuries. Two other adults and another teenager were treated at the scene.

Meanwhile, on Friday night, a motorcyclist died in a collision with a vehicle at Bacchus Marsh.
