Plan to scrap crime in Vic auto wrecking

Organised crime in the wrecking industry could be destined for the scrap heap if a Victorian pilot project is a success.

Victoria Police, Consumer Affairs and other agencies will join forces to create industry guidelines in a bid to stop crime syndicates infiltrating auto wrecking and scrap metal operations.

The move comes after the Victorian Law Reform Commission found the state should look at methods such as licensing more industries to stop organised crime infiltrating them.

The Commission examined how regulation can stop organised crime from infiltrating legitimate industries - and it found licences were the most effective method.

"There is no 'one size fits all' approach, regulatory responses to risks of infiltration must be considered on an industry-by-industry basis," the report, tabled in parliament on Wednesday, says.

The security, debt collection, trucking, tattooing, sports and scrap metal industries were found to be among the most vulnerable.

The pilot project for the wrecking industry is planned to launch in July.
