Monkey bike accused may have bail revoked

The Melbourne teen accused of fatally striking a mother with his mini-motorbike breached his bail conditions for love, a court heard.

Caleb Jakobsson, 19, is at risk of being returned to custody after a court heard evidence of another breach of strict bail conditions set by the Victorian Supreme Court last October.

Jakobsson was bailed after being charged with culpable driving causing the death of nurse and mother Andrea Lehane, 34.

Prosecutors filed an application for his bail to be revoked last month after it was revealed the teen had breached his curfew eight times - and that the relative he is staying with had not immediately reported it to police.

At a bail review hearing on Thursday, the relative, who cannot be named, said the curfew breaches were "just a stupid thing that he's done".

"He's in love," the relative told the Melbourne Magistrates court on Thursday.

Jakobsson has formed a supportive relationship and friendship with a local 30-year-old mother of one, the relative told the court.

She said she failed to report Jakobsson's breaches, despite giving an undertaking to the Supreme Court that she would, because she was trying to show mercy.

"I didn't think he was a threat," she said.

"Every one of those instances he was somewhere local."

The court heard Jakobsson breached his curfew on January 24, twice in February, three times in March and three times in April.

On one occasion he did not come home at all.

The relative said he told her he was "hanging out" with friends watching DVDs on the nights he was out late.

Last month Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg added more conditions to Jakobsson's bail, including that he attend court for regular reviews, when prosecutors applied for the revocation.

The details of the alleged breach have been suppressed and Jakobsson's bail has been continued until Monday when he will learn if he will have to surrender his freedom.

Prosecutor Cheri Lee said Jakobsson had committed not just one breach, but multiple breaches.

"What you have is a flagrant disregard for orders made by the Supreme Court," Ms Lee said.

Defence barrister Jacob Kantor said Jakobsson had demonstrated his attitude has changed.
