Victoria Police are still trying to crack the case as to how a truck and a tram collided in Melbourne on Monday morning, disrupting local traffic for 10 hours.

A tram carrying 46 people and a truck collided crossing Elliott Ave in Parkville after 8am on Monday, with 14 people including the tram driver taken to hospital.

The truck was on its side and both carriages of the B-class tram came off its rails.

Police are yet to determine whether the driver was at fault or if the traffic lights malfunctioned, and have collected dozens of witness statements.

"Somebody has gone through a red light but whether it was the tram or the truck, we don't know," Senior Sergeant Stephen Wilson told reporters.

The incident disrupted peak hour traffic with vehicles back using the road from 4pm while trams were back on track at 6pm.
