Melbourne's MLC cuts ties with church

A prestigious Melbourne girls' private school has cut ties with the Uniting Church, preventing it from having a say on how the school is run.

The Uniting Church has accepted "with some sadness" that Methodist Ladies' College is changing its constitution, removing church involvement in decision making.

School board chairwoman Louise Adler says in a statement the new board must reflect modern governance requirements and recognise the college's independence.

General Secretary of the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria Reverend Mark Lawrence said the church would continue with its chaplaincy program in the school.
