A man who was arrested and then released over his housemate's death has been remanded to return interstate over a NSW warrant.

Alex Freeburn was arrested near Warrnambool on Saturday after police called for him to hand himself in.

The body of his housemate, a 29-year-old woman, was found in a Kew townhouse on Tuesday.

Freeburn was released on Sunday after being interviewed by homicide detectives.

However the 26-year-old was then remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday over a NSW warrant.

During a brief appearance, Freeburn - who is not presently facing any charges - was remanded in custody until the arrival of NSW police on Tuesday to transfer him to the Sydney Police Centre, the court heard.

Detectives are yet to determine if the woman's death is suspicious.
